Expansion joints are a crucial element of your in-ground swimming pool. This is the thin gap between the pool coping and your decking. 

Expansion joints keep water out to avoid erosion causing your decking to lose support and concrete to shift or crack. If you have a paver deck, the pavers will start to settle in the area right behind the pool coping. Water can also penetrate the bond beam (the pool wall) and freeze, causing the coping or pool tiles to crack or become loose. The seasonal temperature changes of the North East also play a huge roll in the necessity of sealing your expansion joint.
